A woman’s face is said to be the most attractive when the vertical length ratio of forehead to eyebrows, eyebrows to nose tip and nose tip to chin tip is 1:1:1 or almost in the same rate. The most reason that women faces are not in an ideal look is because of a weak chin due to underdevelopment of the chin.
If a patient has the upper and lower teeth aligned properly, it is simple to correct the receding chin. This condition is known as ‘Microgenia’ (an abnormal smallness size of the chin) and it can be corrected by the chin implant or orthognathic surgery.
Patients who not only have a small jaw but also have the lower teeth in an irregular inward position should have a surgical procedure done to move the entire chin forward as well as orthodontic treatment. This type of condition is called micrognathia which is a medical term for an abnormal smallness of the jaw, especially the lower jaw, causing the fault meeting of the teeth.
It is a surgical procedure to correct the small chin tip when your bite is properly aligned. In this technique, the surgeon cuts the chin tip then moves the lower portion of separated bone forward and wires in position. By grafting the patient’s bone, it is possible to add more volume to the chip tip and correct it in a good position. This procedure can be performed without the use of artificial implant material and it is also effective in creating a beautiful neck line while significantly adjusting the position of the chin tip.
There are various types of materials for chin implant and the most common materials are Gore-Tex and silicone. The implant material is used based on patient’s bone shape.
Chin implant is a relatively simple procedure that can be completed within 30 minutes. One or two small incisions (approximately 1 cm length) are made to insert an implant material.
Corrective surgery for mandibular micrognathia requires the correction of both upper jaw and lower jaw.
It is not only the chin tip advancement but the entire chin need to be moved forward. Therefore, a surgery plan should be made in cooperation with orthodontic treatment plan.
With a thorough examination of the facial contour, the decision for the surgical correction of micrognathia is made in consideration of patient’s bite and chin conditions.
After a completion of orthodontic treatment, a surgical procedure will be started. An entire procedure is performed inside of the mouth and the operation time is approximately 90 minutes for an uncomplicated case. The surgeon cuts the bottom part of the entire chin bone, slices it forward and securely fixes it.
The hospitalization is 1 day and rubber bands are used for the inter-maxillary fixation for 1 to 4 weeks.
After a completion of a surgical procedure, the patient’s condition will be analyzed using detailed pictures and the orthodontic treatment will be executed for several weeks or months to prevent the recurrence.
