Canthoplasty is a surgery to incise the medial or lateral fold of the eye to enhance the overall shape and/or size of the eye. It is usually performed with double eyelid surgery to create a more dramatic and satisfactory outcome. In general, the inner fold of the eye is removed for about 50 to 80% to create a natural look and the outer conners of the eyelids are incised in consideration of eyes’ characteristics.
Banobagi independently developed excellent method of epicanthoplasty for less visible sign of inequality shaped scar on inner corner of the eyes. Natural Epicanthoplasty method does not excise under the eye area which may easily leave a scar to proceed the surgery regardless of physical condition.
It is usually performed if double eyelid surgery or epicantholasty cannot create a satisfactory result. Since it removes the lateral corner of the eye, there is a lower risk of re-adhesion of the outer corner. Also, no visible scar is remained since an incision is made to the inside of the lateral corner.
Lower Canthoplasty is to lengthen the vertical height of the eye and lowering the lower eyelid down. The eye will look bigger with more exposure of pupil, so a gentle and kind look is created. Since an incision is made on the conjunctiva, no visible scars would be remained and stitches need not to be removed.
